What is Friends of Fiber Art International?

Founded in 1991, Friends of Fiber Art International is dedicated to tell the world about the art medium of the 21st century - fiber - which includes artworks using flexible materials or constructed in textile techniques.
Approximately 400 members from 40 of the United States and 18 other nations join together in the belief that a support group at large will make a difference in the art world's appreciation of contemporary fiber art. The membership is almost equally divided between artists and collectors with ten percent affiliated with museums and galleries.
In the first four years of operation, Friends of Fiber Art International awarded more than $35,000 in grants to support projects that reach a large audience such as traveling exhibitions with professionally produced catalogs.
Funds for these grants came from unspent dues (especially upper-level memberships) and proceeds from programs and tours.
You are cordially invited to join this enthusiastic group of Friends who know that this is an effective way to spread the word about extraordinary art in fibrous materials created by legions of artists from Abakanowicz to Zeisler.

Purpose
Throughout history fiber has been a rich and honored medium for embellishing life and after life. Today, the creative potential of this medium is being expanded. In order to increase appreciation and understanding of contemporary art in fiber media, a group of collectors, artists, and enthusiasts decided to form Friends of Fiber Art International to :

Disseminate information about and encourage collection of contemporary fiber art,
Support museum shows of fiber art through direct funding and maintenance of the Registry of Contemporary Fiber Art Collections,
Encourage scholarship and critical writing about art constructed in fibrous materials,
Stimulate fiber art exhibition in galleries and,
Educate collectors and potential collectors through tours and visits to fiber art collections.

Publication
Every quarter Friends of Fiber Art International publishes an outspoken newsletter, Dear Friends, that isn't afraid to address any matter that impacts contemporary fiber art. Included is one of the most complete calendars of fiber art exhibitions anywhere. It highlights the artist-Friends that exhibit and collector-Friends that lend work to shows.

Programs
In conjunction with some of the most important American and European fiber art events. Friends schedule meetings, tours and conferences. Opportunities for artist-Friends to show their work are included. The Lausanne Biennial, SOFA, the International Miniature Exhibit in Hungary, openings of Friends-supported exhibitions, and the International Triennial in Poland have all been occasions to inspire Friends programs of one to fourteen days length.

Grant Projects
In this era of shrinking public funding, Friends of Fiber Art International's grant program becomes increasingly important. High-profile exhibitions that travel to several cities, gain publicity and introduce many viewers to contemporary fiber art are the favored grant recipients.
