Recognition by Kathy O'Meara Magnuson
Size: 22" x 22"
Computer programmer, database administrator, and instructor.
My current focus is the creation and development of World
Wide Web sites. My love of computers had its roots in the
early days in the pharmaceutical industry, storing 3D
chemicals in 2D Wiswesser Line Notation. Currently I combine
it with my role as a textile artist, most noticeably in
computer-assisted designing and for communication with other
quilt artists.
"Recognition" was created to challenge one's concept of a "quilt" - while it meets the basic criteria (layers of cotton fabric on either side of a batting, stitched together, forming a design), most people would agree it's quite unusual to find that the hand-sewn designs are formed by items raided from my husband's workshop, and are primarily made of metal. The finishing technique is also very unconventional. Many might look at this piece and exclaim "That's Not A real Quilt!" Or is it?
