Artist's Statement

We can create our own reality, and my art is a manifestation of that belief. We need healing, we need to walk in partnership in order to assist in the healing of the Earth. The images of shrines and houses in my work symbolize the vitality and importance of each tiny part of our world. We must appreciate and revere all aspects of the natural world. Much of the inspiration for my work comes to me during my daily walks. The simplicity of the landscape which surrounds me provokes a profound sense of awe and wonder in the creations of Mother Nature.
More and more the imagery and symbols in my work derive from the art of different cultures and world history. Current reading, including The Chalice and the Blade, Flow, and Buffalo Woman Comes Singing, conjures images and messages that are now major elements in my work. From all these influences, I construct positive images of our life in the world.
The processes involved in the creation of my work include painting on fabrics with textile inks and fiber reactive dyes, cutting, piecing, applique, quilting, and embellishing. Many pieces grow spontaneously, while others develop from original drawings. Intuition plays a strong part in the process of building my art quilts. Painting and embellishment are equally important in my work. One influences the other, they are dependent on each other, and together create a unified whole. I am equally fascinated by color, pattern, line and texture and how those elements can be combined to emphasize the idea behind the work. References to traditional quilt-making appear throughout my work to honor the history of this medium.
I hope that my work challenges, excites, inspires, and ultimately delivers a sense of positive feeling towards our environment.
