My approach to quilt design is similar to a painter's: I use color, composition, and scale to capture the spirit of nature, but through the medium of fabric and thread. My love of color and my affinity for nature are obvious in my quilts. The soft tints of an iris, the elegant form of foxgloves, the patterned perfection of butterfly wings - I am endlessly enchanted and inspired by the natural world.

Nature's colors and patterns are the essence of my quilt designs, but scale is what makes them unique. Many classic works of art depict nature on a scale smaller than real life. A landscape places you in a relatively distant position, and even a still life may portray the subject at less than its actual size. I do just the opposite: I take life and amplify it. My geraniums, butterflies, and sunflowers are much larger than those you see in your garden. When you stand in front of one of my quilts, I hope you will feel surrounded by its vast color and sweeping shapes. Color and composition are essential elements in my designs, but the greatest emotional and aesthetic impact comes from their larger-than-life scale.
