I have been playing with cloth, buttons and threads from the time that I was four or five years old, when my Grandmother let me play with her scraps. I was allowed to play with these materials and was never told the "correct" way to use them and I created freely. I continued to explore many areas in art including (but not Limited to), drawing, painting, clay, paper-making, photography, quilting, sculpture, collage, jewelry, and mixed media. I learned many skills and different techniques from these other media but nothing seemed as gratifying as working/playing with "FIBER." It wasn't until I started to make cloth dolls about five years ago that I realized I could use all the things I had learned in art and apply it to cloth doll making.
Most of my dolls/figures are of the female figure as I find this shape a challenge and the possibilities to explore are endless. I am interested in the ancient Goddess figures and the power and spirit that they bring to women. Discoveries are made about myself and the world through the study of the human figure and I have started to incorporate the male form into my work. I continue to be challenged, stimulated, and excited by "The Cloth Doll."
In addition, I have been a children's art teacher for the past twelve years and have taught at many schools and art galleries in the Bay Area. I started to teach children after I could not find the kind of classes I wanted for my own two sons that would give them the freedom to explore. I encourage all my students to find their sense of spirit and individualism through the ideas and techniques that I present to them. I hope my classes are a starting point for new idea and that the students will want to create long after they have left the classroom.
I am currently the Education Coordinator of the Sun Gallery in Hayward CA. Children form all over the Bay Area come with their classes on a field trip to take a tour of the art gallery and do a hands-on art project that related to our ever changing art exhibitions. In the past year I have worked/played with over 6,000 children, their parents, teachers and constantly feel inspired by playing with "Children" of all ages.
